We might be biased but we don’t think there’s anything quite as beautiful as fashion and those who draw and illustrate them well. While bloggers and models are becoming celebrities in their own right, illustrators are turning to them for inspiration. We looked to the web fro our favorite local artists who are training their sights and pens on the people who make the fashion industry tick.

Izziyana Suhaimi works have been published in both local and international magazines and she has since collaborated with many in the art scene. Her distinct fusion of embroidery and illustrations are works that vividly outstanding.

What do you enjoy about illustrations?

The power of lines.

How long have you been doing illustrations?

I’ve been doing illustrations for a couple of years now.

What is the appeal of illustrations?

Making real of what is just in your head, however unreal it might be. Every illustration is like sharing a little secret of yourself with others, exhilarating but kind of mortifying.

Did you have any formal training in illustration? Is that necessary?

No, I did not. I don’t think it’s necessary. There aren’t any set rules to illustration (and if there are I don’t know any of them!). I think it’s about practise and finding that style and voice that is distinctly you – and that’s just a lot of messing around and having fun.

What are your next steps – where do you want illustration to take you?

Collaborations! I work primarily with embroidery and I really want to push this medium. I think combining forces with artists from varying disciplines is a good step towards exploring what it can do.

Do you think illustration is becoming is more popular now, and does it have a significant place in the fashion world?

Yes, absolutely. There are many fashion designers who are also extremely talented illustrators. One example is Charles Anastase, who started out as an illustrator and then went into fashion. I absolutely love his work! I think illustration has the ability to bring fashion to an entirely new level. It gives the clothes a different sensibility.
