So What, I’m Bougie!

I have a few “friends” and co-workers who on occasion like to call me “bougie.”  Each time they do, I cut them a glance out of the corner of my eye. I’m not sure what their intention is? Are they being mean-spirited? I didn’t think so.

I never know what I do or say that triggers them to blurt out,  “You’re so bougie!” When it happens, I do a quick assessment of what I said, what I’m wearing . . . Is it my shoes?

Recently, after being called bougie (again) by a black co-worker, I asked her, ‘Why did you call me that?’ She couldn’t give me a straight answer . . . Just ‘BS’ about “it’s just who you are.” So I told her, “Ok, I guess I’ll just be bougie and proud!”

When I came across a blog dedicated to the bouge, I thought it appropriate to share and promote my bougie sister. Her blog is awesome and called ‘Black ‘n Bougie’  (hmm, maybe cause I use the word ‘awesome?’) Anyway below is an excerpt from her blog where she explains her definition of what bougie really means (and I concur)  She has a Black & Bougie Radio Network, Her name is Michele Grant, aka ‘OneChele.’

 Bouge Basics:

What is BougieLand, you may ask?

BougieLand is my own little made up world where bougie isn’t bad… it’s beautiful. I’ve decided to embrace the positive aspects of bouge and own it. Bouge is love.

bou·gie Pronunciation: \ˈbü-ˌzhē, -ˌjē\ From Wikipedia & Merriam-Webster ya’ll: Bourgeoisie is a classification used in analyzing human societies to describe a social class of people. Historically, the bourgeoisie comes from the middle classes whose status or power came from employment, education, and wealth. In urban pop culture, the word bourgeoisie is shortened to “bougie.”
Adjective meaning extravagant, often to the point of snobbery. Usually used in relation to the conspicuous consumption of the urban upper-middle class.

I’m electing to remove the negative stereotype of bouge and embrace the beauty. Allow me to present (if I may)…

THE BOUGE RULES (what puts the bouge in bougie)

  1. Bougie is more than a way of life, it’s a state of mind
  2. Bougie does not equal stuck-up, siddity & pretty… unless it does
  3. There’s nothing wrong with being bougie if your heart is true to the bouge
  4. If you are true to the bouge, people will hate on you. You won’t care, you are too busy being bougie
  5. You can be born bougie, you can marry into bouge and you can evolve into bougie
  6. You can be bougie and hood but not at the same time
  7. You are no longer bougie if you are completely ghetto (fabulous or not)
  8. You can be broke and bougie but bougie works better with bank
  9. Bouge brings responsibility. Do not shame your bouge brothers and sisters lest you be kicked up out the bouge circle
  10. Bouge is old school people, we don’t hate… we congratulate.

Are You Listening?

Posted by in Being There, Zen

How do we listen, really?  Do we listen in order to judge, to dismiss, to find a point of contention?  Do we listen only well enough to gauge when a response – a grunt – is called for?  Do we listen to gather evidence that we are right and that they are wrong? Do we listen so that we can reply, or one-up the speaker?  When the sunrise speaks to us, do we compare it to another, or simply let it fill us?

Each of us yearns to be heard, to be understood.  How well, how deeply, do we listen?

Are You Listening?.

Thoughts: Creating A Better Life

In addition to blogging I am also a small business owner. While I love my art, full-time job and blogging; I also realize there is a limit to how many things one person can do (and do well)  I have floundered a bit in trying to give Bohemian Home Journal a voice and direction . . .I ‘m the kind of person who jumps in head first then figures out things along the way (not recommended for the faint of heart)  so it recently occurred to me to incorporate more of what I need in this blog  (it’s always the obvious we don’t see) and others (like me) who need this info will appreciate the posts.

My plan is to create a section on small business ownership and life management tips for personal and professional growth. I have reached out to a few ‘experts’ in these areas that I admire, who I hope will allow me to post their information and direct people to their site.

While I consider myself to be a smart woman, I know certain management areas in my life are all over the place; ‘flying by the seat of my pants’ is what my mother would call it. Anyway stay tuned and wish me luck.

In February 2003, millions of people all over the globe took to the streets to oppose President George W. Bush’s plan to invade Iraq. Poets responded by organizing a great uprising, Poets Against the War, on February 12, 2003. Here in DC, Sarah Browning organized an open mic reading at All Souls Unitarian Church that evening, hoping that poets of all sorts would join together to speak out for peaceful alternatives. Sarah didn’t know what to expect, though, as she’d only recently arrived in the city. To her astonishment, over 175 people turned out, with 60 signing up to read and perform. DC Poets Against the War was born. Five years later, in 2008, the group presented the first Split This Rock Poetry Festival, giving birth to a national movement bringing poetry to the center of public life, where it belongs!

Join us on Sunday February 17th as we mark the 10th anniversary of DC Poets Against the War and mourn the great tragedy of the Iraq War.

Poets who were active in the group will read their own work and the work and poetry of the missing voices: Iraqi poets, Afghan poets, and essential poets we’ve lost since 2003, such as Adrienne Rich, Lucille Clifton, Grace Paley, and Dennis Brutus.

New looks I like from from Free People

I’ve been trying to talk several of my friends into starting a blog because I think they would be good at it and in turn find it enjoyable. Came across this post, thought it would be good to share and hopefully motivate some folks.

When I surpassed 50 followers, I wrote a post thanking all my readers for listening, and got a lot of feedback. I got asked how I created a blog that 50 people thought was worth reading in just 2 months, so I decided to make this post. (Not that I think my blog is super great or anything. Cause I don’t. I just try to make something that I would want to read.) So here are some ideas that might help take your blog to the next level.

Actually, I liked that thing I just said. Let’s make that #1.

1. Make a blog you would want to read.

This is your space. You have freedom to make it something that is 100% uniquely you. So don’t be afraid to change things that aren’t working for you to make it better. I’ve redone my “About Me” page, which should be…

The Nam-Hai

My friend Peggy went to Vietnam recently (one of her stops on her trip around the world) If I ever get a chance to visit Vietnam, this place would be on the top of my list.

A paradisal resort near Hoi An which boasts 100 striking villas along the palm-fringed sands of White China Beach.
