Sandra Backlund is a designer of Swedish origin, she studied fashion at Beckmans College in Stockholm and also history of art, textiles and handicrafts. Her clothes are very special made entirely by hand and strictly monochromatic. The starting point of her creations is the human body, she improvises on a tailor’s dummy or on herself to discover new forms and silhouettes, she doesn’t draw her knitwear, but invents while is realizing them. The method of work is based on a three-dimensional collage knitting. Fabulous!

Here’s the back story about this cheesecake. Elsie has been raving about this caramel apple cheesecake that her sister-in-law Katrina made a couple years ago. I’ve heard about dessert multiple times. So when I asked Elsie what she thought I should make for Friendsgiving dessert she, on que, brought up this cheesecake again. I emailed Katrina asking for what I was sure was an old family recipe, and she sent me this link. Paula Deen has done it again. 🙂 I adapted it to fit a standard size spring form pan and served it up. Lots of guests enjoyed it, but it’s always so hard to eat dessert after a big meal. It’s hard to leave room. So I sent a few folks home with extra slices. A few days later a certain (nameless, to protect identities) guest mentioned that her husband may have eaten all three slices I sent home that very night.
So, my point is, this was a hit. If you like cheesecake you should definitely give this a try.Best apple cheesecakeCaramel Apple Cheesecake
1 1/2 cups flour
3/4 cup brown sugar
3/4 cup (1 and 1/2 sticks) butter
2 8oz packages cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 sour apples, peeled and chopped
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
For the crust combine 1 cup flour, 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter in a food processor and pulse until crumbly. Press into the bottom of butter spring form pan. Bake at 350°F for 5-6 minutes until browned.
For the cheese cake combine the cream cheese, 1/2 cup sugar, eggs and vanilla extract and stir until well combined. I did this in my mixer. Easy as pie (hey!). Pour into your prepared pan. Combine chopped apples with a few sprinkles of sugar, the cinnamon and the nutmeg, and then layer those over the cheesecake.
For the topping combine 1/2 cup flour,1/2 cup brown sugar and 1/4 cup butter. Mix together by hand until crumbly, layer on top. Bake the cheesecake for another 30-35 minutes. Allow to cool before serving (you can make this the day before Turkey Day!). Drizzle on a little caramel sauce just before serving if you are feeling fancy. xo. Emma

Nikki Giovanni is a world-renowned poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator. One of the most widely read American poets, she prides herself on being “a Black American, a daughter, a mother, a professor of English.”
I first heard Nikki Giovanni when I was a sophomore in college. In those days we listened to everything on vinyl. ‘Ego Tripping’ was the first of her poems I listen too; and to this day is still one of many favorites from that time period. I highly recommend listening to the recorded version. The words are powerful, but to hear her say them, you’ll be blown away.
Ego Tripping (there may be a reason why)
I was born in the congo
I walked to the fertile crescent and built
the sphinx
I designed a pyramid so tough that a star
that only glows every one hundred years falls
into the center giving divine perfect light
I am bad
I sat on the throne
drinking nectar with allah
I got hot and sent an ice age to europe
to cool my thirst
My oldest daughter is nefertiti
the tears from my birth pains
created the nile
I am a beautiful woman
I gazed on the forest and burned
out the sahara desert
with a packet of goat’s meat
and a change of clothes
I crossed it in two hours
I am a gazelle so swift
so swift you can’t catch me
For a birthday present when he was three
I gave my son hannibal an elephant
He gave me rome for mother’s day
My strength flows ever on
My son noah built new/ark and
I stood proudly at the helm
as we sailed on a soft summer day
I turned myself into myself and was
jesus
men intone my loving name
All praises All praises
I am the one who would save
I sowed diamonds in my back yard
My bowels deliver uranium
the filings from my fingernails are
semi-precious jewels
On a trip north
I caught a cold and blew
My nose giving oil to the arab world
I am so hip even my errors are correct
I sailed west to reach east and had to round off
the earth as I went
The hair from my head thinned and gold was laid
across three continents
I am so perfect so divine so ethereal so surreal
I cannot be comprehended except by my permission
I mean…I…can fly
like a bird in the sky…

Shakti Gawain’s book ‘Living in the Light’ was a big inspiration to me. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the publication. I found this interview with Shakti by BJ Gallagher and it inspired me to dig through my library and find the book I loved so much 25 years ago to get some much needed inspiration today.
Excerpt of Shakti’s Interview on Huffington Post
with BJ Gallagher
Years ago I read Living in the Light by Shakti Gawain and loved it. I gave the book to my mom who called me when she finished reading it and said, “That’s the way you live YOUR life!” Mom, she was right — Shakti’s book describes very well how I’ve always lived my life — I just didn’t know anyone else did it. I had never heard other people talk about living by intuition and heeding their own internal guidance system. I felt affirmed and validated after reading Shakti’s book.
This year is the 25th anniversary of the publication of Living in the Light by New World Library, so I thought it would be interesting to check in with the author and see what she’s up to lately. I figured it would be a real treat to interview an author who’s been such a positive influence on my life, and tens of millions of other lives, too.
BJ: What is it you want people to understand about how to “live in the light”?
Shakti: We all have within us a deep wisdom, but sometimes we don’t know we have it. We live in a culture that doesn’t acknowledge or validate human intuition and doesn’t encourage us to rely on our intuitive wisdom. Much of the Western world emphasizes rationality and reason, but overlooks or ignores the enormous value of intuition and instinctive wisdom. When I wrote Living in the Light, I wanted to share about how I live my own life and to encourage people to tap into their own inner wisdom.
It’s so practical to connect to that source of guidance on a day-to-day, hour-by-hour basis. Your intuition will tell you where you need to go; it will connect you with people you should meet; it will guide you toward work that is meaningful for you – work that brings you joy, work that feels right for you. Listening to your internal guidance system will lead to a rich, fulfilled, happy life. That’s been my experience… and millions of folks can attest to it in their own lives as well. Of course life is not always easy and in fact, some are very difficult. This is all part of the process of being human.
