Group Game: Can Losing Weight Put $ in My Pocket?

A  friend sent me a link yesterday as extra incentive to stay on my diet.  I’m  intrigued. . . I  haven’t tried it, nor am I endorsing; however the idea is interesting enough to share with everyone and let me hear your thoughts on whether this is something you would try.

The site is called Dietbets, you can join a new group online, or start your own. Basically you put money in a pot and split it with everyone who drops weight within the required time frame. Check out the video.

  1. Dietbet
A Dietbet is a 28-day contest to lose weight. Dietbets must have at least two Players but there is no upper limit. Most Dietbets involve betting into a Pot. Other Dietbets are strictly for non-monetary stakes, or Bonus Stakes.
  2. Organizer
The Organizer initiates the game, invites Players, and sets the start date and bet amount. In Hosted games, DietBet is the Organizer. In Private games, the Organizer can also a Player.
  3. Hosted Game
A game organized by DietBet or a person associated with DietBet. These games are open to the public and players can invite their friends to play with them.
  4. Private Game
A game organized by an individual who wishes to play with friends, and friends of friends only.
  5. Player
Players are the participants in a Dietbet. They are eligible to split the Pot (if any) in the event that they meet their weight-loss goals.
  6. Bet
A bet is money paid by a player in a Dietbet at the beginning of a Dietbet. The bet is added to the Pot, which will be distributed to the winners of the Dietbet after the final Weigh-Out.
  7. Pot
The Pot is the amount of money that will be split among the Players of a Dietbet who meet their Target Weights as of Day 28 of a Dietbet. The Pot can be zero if the Dietbet is being played strictly for non-monetary stakes. If Players have bet into the Pot, the Pot is the sum of the Bets.

Shakti’s Interview on Huffington Post

Shakti Gawain’s book ‘Living in the Light’ was a big inspiration to me. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the publication. I found this interview with Shakti by BJ Gallagher and it inspired me to dig through my library and find the book I loved so much 25 years ago to get some much needed inspiration today.

Excerpt of Shakti’s Interview on Huffington Post
with BJ Gallagher

Years ago I read Living in the Light by Shakti Gawain and loved it. I gave the book to my mom who called me when she finished reading it and said, “That’s the way you live YOUR life!” Mom, she was right — Shakti’s book describes very well how I’ve always lived my life — I just didn’t know anyone else did it. I had never heard other people talk about living by intuition and heeding their own internal guidance system. I felt affirmed and validated after reading Shakti’s book.

This year is the 25th anniversary of the publication of Living in the Light by New World Library, so I thought it would be interesting to check in with the author and see what she’s up to lately. I figured it would be a real treat to interview an author who’s been such a positive influence on my life, and tens of millions of other lives, too.

BJ: What is it you want people to understand about how to “live in the light”?

Shakti: We all have within us a deep wisdom, but sometimes we don’t know we have it. We live in a culture that doesn’t acknowledge or validate human intuition and doesn’t encourage us to rely on our intuitive wisdom. Much of the Western world emphasizes rationality and reason, but overlooks or ignores the enormous value of intuition and instinctive wisdom. When I wrote Living in the Light, I wanted to share about how I live my own life and to encourage people to tap into their own inner wisdom.

It’s so practical to connect to that source of guidance on a day-to-day, hour-by-hour basis. Your intuition will tell you where you need to go; it will connect you with people you should meet; it will guide you toward work that is meaningful for you – work that brings you joy, work that feels right for you. Listening to your internal guidance system will lead to a rich, fulfilled, happy life. That’s been my experience… and millions of folks can attest to it in their own lives as well. Of course life is not always easy and in fact, some are very difficult. This is all part of the process of being human.
