Tech Tools and Tips for Parents

If you’re the parent of a son or daughter in elementary, middle or high school then you probably have a love hate relationship with new technology and social media. Smart phones, tablets, iPods, mp3 players, Kindel eReaders, Nooks, Facebook, Twitter,  MySpace, video sharing sites and so on . . . it never seems to stop! . . . and it makes some adults run for cover and hide (preferably in a dark cave) rather than talk to their children and teens about electronics they can, can’t, should or shouldn’t use in school, home or any other place.

For our parents, it was basic TV and land line telephones; with very simple operating systems our parents could see, touch and understand how to easily set solid ground rules that were monitored without too much trouble.

Today it’s much more complicated for parents, and only a few seem to have mastered techniques to control and enhance the education and communication skills their children need in the 21st century.  Responses from parents such as; “I didn’t need that stuff when I was your age” or “You really don’t need those things to help you with your school work” no longer work.  The “old days” of pencils, pens, notepaper, manual typewriters and encyclopedias are long gon. . . Like it or not, technology and social media are not going away; so bite the bullet and reap the benefits.

By learning the ropes of social media and Web based programs, you’ll discover great new tools to help your children with time management of school work and extra-curricular activities. You’ll also help them by learning safety and security settings of Internet sites they visit.

Social media sites can be a fun place for conversation with friends, or a nightmare for kids and parents not savvy in those arenas. Google Alerts www.google.com/alert  is a helpful online tool to keep an eye on bullies and predators.  Parents can set up alerts to get warnings and notices if their child’s name is mentioned on the Internet.

Become a silent friend on sites such as Twitter and Facebook; this will enable you to see how your children interact with others . . .  Please try to be  a silent friend (hard as that may be.) Nothing can break down communication and humiliate your child more than reprimanding them on their Facebook wall!  Have a conversation face to face to talk about rude or thoughtless behavior.  Privacy settings on these sites can limit who can see what they post. One of the best online resources on Internet safety is www.mysecurecyberspace.com; it’s a free educational resource created by Carnegie Mellon University.

Google Apps and Google Calendar can put an end to excuses such as; “The dog ate my homework, “I thought I put it in my notebook.” and “I didn’t know about the assignment.” Google docs  www.google.com/google-d-s/b1.html  is a free Web-based office suite and data storage service offered by Google, with all of the bells and whistles.  It allows users to create and edit documents online while collaborating in real-time with other users. If a homework report is due on the photosynthesis of plants, your son or daughter can type and save the report in a private online account you both have access to. On the day the report is due, it can be open and printed from a school computer. Ain’t technology grand!

Google calendar www.google.com/intl/en/googlecalendar/about.html  can help teach your kids time management skills. You can set up and send alerts to remind them of upcoming assignments and activities.  The alerts can be sent to cell phones and/or email accounts. Send as many alerts as you like from any computer, and yes, it’s free. The calendar is stored online and can be viewed from any location that has Internet access. It can also import calendar files from Outlook (.csv) and iCalender (ics) – Multiple calendars can be added and shared, allowing multiple levels of permissions for each user.

Security software and online programs such as Family Norton onlinefamily.norton.com/ and MacAfee Family Protection http://www.mcafeefamilyprotection.com/b/ monitor Web surfing and can block sites you don’t want your children to visit.

For more helpful parenting advice and tips check out the book by Ian Lurie, The UnFun Parent: Keeping your kids safe online – He’s a good writer and knows  how to easily explain things without the complicated jargon.  Simple, straightforward, easy-to-abide-by rules to keep your young children safe online. This book is an good read and broken down into sections you can easily go back and reference the information you want to review again.

Cape Point

Cape Point

Cape Point is in South Africa and is the tip of Cape peninsula. I once believed it was the southern most tip of Africa and the dividing point between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Not so, I recently found out that Cape Agulhas, which is a few hundred miles to the east of Cape Point is the southern most tip. No matter, this is still one of the most spectacular sites I have ever seen.

Samsung Galaxy Tablet

I test drove a Samsung Galaxy Tablet for a few days. Overall my experience was pretty positive. If you like tablets this is a pretty good one. What I didn’t like initially was the interface. I didn’t think it was very intuitive, so if you’re like me and don’t like to read directions it may take a bit to get off the ground running.  Once I became familiar with how things worked, it was smooth sailing. The HD screen resolution is amazing! You couldn’t ask for better clarity. If you like to watch movies, the size of the screen makes it possible to see pretty much the whole picture.  No black bars, yeah!!!

No snail pace Internet surfing on this baby either. I found myself zooming from one website to another without delay. I’m not a fan of touch screens, but this tablet was very responsive. You don’t need a heavy hand (or finger) to get links or applications open. I still prefer a keyboard over a touch screen. Now lets talk about battery life. This bad boy has great battery life. I have an older Samsung phone that doesn’t last very long if I go online or use any of the social apps.  The battery dies almost immediately. The Samsung Galaxy Tablet I’m happy to say has a very robust battery life.

The weight of the tablet is also very light! So you don’t have to worry about it weighing you down. In comparison with everything else you carry around with you it will seem light as a feather. I’m still doing my homework on other options with this tablet. Right now my preference would be a slide out keyboard and the ability to take notes with a stylus type pen. I’m told this kind of feature will be released soon with the newer version Samsung Galaxy Tablets.

Being Me!

I have been going back and forth about whether or not to post this blog under  “me” or an aka . . . So my profile and name have changed a few times, as well as the “look” of this blog.  An alias has advantages for obvious reasons. You don’t have to worry about filtering content and you say what you really feel; something I have always admired in people who are blunt.

As annoying as the trait of ‘being blunt’ may be, I prefer it to the opposite.  If asked, “Does this outfit look good on me?”  Most people really want to know the truth! So I have decided to be me and not hide behind an aka or alter ego persona. As my mother would say. “I’ve lived long enough to say whatever the hell I want to say and dare anyone to say anything to me about it!”

So out of the shadows I come. Hello world, here I am. Love me as I am or leave me be!!

Washington Post Article on Black Women

I stopped by Caribou Coffee this morning to treat myself to a cup of coffee and a muffin before heading to work. I hadn’t been there in a while so I perused the hanging menu list for something good to eat while waiting in line. While trying to decide between an apple fritter and a low fat berry muffin my eyes were drawn to a picture and headline on the Washington Post. On the front page was a very large picture of a full figured black woman with short natural blond hair wearing a sports bra and spandex work out pants! The headline read “Full of Love for Full Figures – followed by a sub-heading “Black women tend to outweigh white women but like their bodies more.”

Without thinking I snatched up the paper, folded it under my arm and ordered my breakfast thinking, “I can’t remember the last time I bought a newspaper but I have got to read this!”

I didn’t have time to read it when I first got to work, so I gave it to my co-worker to review while I finished up a morning assignment. A few minutes later I heard. “Oh Lord” following by a chuckle. She then came around the corner holding her chess (still laughing) and read out loud from the article.

“In the pre-dawn darkness, the gym doors closed and the black women started to move. . . My eyes widened and my jaw dropped and I thought. “What the HELL, is this an article about fitness and health or National Geographic?  “Wait” she said, “There is more,” then read, “Her ample bosom strains against the top of her sequined half camisole.” “Oh my god,” I said, and we both threw our hands up in the air and laughed out loud! – “I don’t know if I can read the rest of this,” said my co-worker and she went back to her desk only to come back a few seconds later holding back her laughter as she read another quote from the article.  “She demonstrates hinge-kicks above her own head and sweat darkens the waistband that clings to the uber-roundness of her bottom!”  We both look at each other and shook our heads. I handed her a highlighter and said, ‘Please highlight those lines . . . this is unbelievable.”

Now mind you our outburst of laughter was not because we found the article funny, ha, ha . . . but FUNNY in the sense we were shocked by the descriptive narrative and the fact it was on the front page of the Washington Post!

We then handed the paper to a white female co-worker who responded the same way. “Oh My God, is this a sex or romance article?”  We all tried to see some relevance and agreed it was admirable that the woman featured in the article was proud of her full figure and taught an exercise class . . But that was the only positive factor about the article. The next question we all had was “Who wrote this?”

Lonnae O’Neal Parker was the byline above the article. When we looked at the bio we were surprised to see she was a woman of color with a Masters in Journalism and a regular feature writer for the Washington Post Magazine. I repeated the discovery out loud, still shaking my head, “A woman of color with a Masters in Journalism, whoa.”

If the intention of the article was to applaud full figured black women for having a more positive body image, it failed. Instead, the descriptive narrative of the article (as usual) focused on stereotypical imagery, highlighting how statistically different we are SUPPOSE to be as black women.

Shoebox

I just started using this service because I hate keeping track of receipts. You can mail, scan, upload or email receipts and business cards – it works with Freshbooks and you can photograph a receipt with your phone and send it to them anytime. You can also export your verified data to dozens of accounting, financial and CRM tools that you already use.

MyEzbills
http://www.myezbills.com/
I have been using this service for over 10 years! I hate getting bills in the mail. You set up an account and ALL of your bills are mailed to this company. They scan your bills, then email you when they are due or if you haven’t made a payment. It keeps billing address and phone numbers organized also you never have to go to a bunch of individual sites to pay each bill or to view a statement. Everything is in one place. You attach it to your bank account and for $7 a month they will store all of your bills and you can pay everyone online (from one place) or they will mail a check to anyone you want them to.
I think I can do up to 20 bills a month on my plan.

These services are sooooo worth it when you are pressed for time and/or you need to find something fast.

Net Books

Netbooks are one of the more beneficial gadgets available on the market for business people. But it’s not just their functions that attract those who do a lot of business work; it’s also their affordable prices and small, portable sizes. Many people who work in business or have office jobs tend to not only spend a lot of time on their computer, but also travel a lot.

Having important work that needs to be done while also trying to juggle business trips at the same time can be difficult and stressful. This is where netbooks really shine and show just how beneficial they can be. With a netbook, a businessman can take it with him on his business trips and work on his assignments while he’s away from the office. Affordability is always a plus no matter what the product or consumer demographic is, and luckily netbooks are relatively inexpensive compared to larger machines like laptops and notebooks. There are many new and used netbooks under $200 available out there, and the higher-end models are still only about $300-$400. And with the beauty of shopping online, all it takes is a little research to get your hands on some good, quality, cheap netbooks for sale. Taking all of this into consideration, it’s pretty obvious that business people can indeed benefit greatly from owning a netbook. This article was reposted from
